19th Century Brass “Key to Wine” Corkscrew With Detailed Handle
An ingenious 19th-century corkscrew designed in the form of an oversized key, richly decorated with vines and grapes winding along the shaft — a perfect nod to its purpose. At first glance, it appears to be a decorative key with a heraldic crest at the bow. With a twist, however, the stem opens to reveal a hidden steel corkscrew, making it both a practical tool and a whimsical conversation piece.
Such novelty corkscrews were popular in the late 19th to early 20th century, when wine and spirits culture flourished and inventive barware became a mark of refinement. The “key to wine” design is especially desirable among collectors, as it cleverly combines symbolism (the key unlocking pleasure and conviviality) with function.
This example, with its detailed crest and grapevine motif, exemplifies the artistry and humor of European wine accessories from the period.
