“The Denial of Saint Peter” — After Theodoor Rombouts

Sale price$650.00

Flemish School, 19th Century

Oil on Canvas

This dramatic religious scene is a historic interpretation of The Denial of Saint Peter, originally painted in 1646 by the Flemish Baroque master Theodoor Rombouts. Rombouts, a follower of Caravaggio and a key figure in the Antwerp Baroque movement, was renowned for his emotionally charged, candle-lit compositions and intimate storytelling.

This version was executed by a later artist working in the Flemish academic tradition, carefully recreating Rombouts’ iconic composition: Saint Peter seated among soldiers and onlookers, caught in the moment of denying Christ three times before the rooster’s crow. The expressive faces, dramatic gestures, and dark atmospheric background reflect the Baroque emphasis on moral tension and human vulnerability.

Painted on canvas, this work preserves the theatrical lighting and narrative intensity that made the original so compelling. Works like this were created for private collectors, churches, and grand homes throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, allowing European households to live with the great masterpieces of earlier centuries.
