Carved Oak Plate Rack with Lion Head Terminals
Measurements: 31.5 L x 3.75" D x 29.5" H
Era & Origin: Late 19th to early 20th century, likely Continental Europe
Materials: Solid oak with hand-carved detailing
Details & History:
This antique wall-mounted plate rack showcases both function and artistry, with bold lion head carvings flanking each side. Crafted in oak, the rack features two horizontal tiers fitted with notched ledges designed to safely cradle plates or chargers. The simple, linear form is elevated by the characterful hand-carved details, making it as decorative as it is useful.
Plate racks such as this were a staple in European homes for centuries, designed to both display and store treasured ceramics. The open construction and carved supports allow the plates’ decoration to be prominently viewed, transforming utilitarian kitchen storage into a decorative focal point. The lion’s head terminals further nod to a classical motif, symbolizing protection and strength in the home.
Condition:
Overall very good antique condition. The oak is structurally sound once hung in place, though the supports are of thinner wood than typical—an aspect consistent with its design and age. The rack remains sturdy for display when wall-mounted, with natural patina and light wear from time.
Note: All items are antique and could show signs of wear or age. We do our utmost best to point out, photograph, and mention any noticeable flaws.
