18th Century French Hand-Colored Engraving in Gilt Frame

Sale price$150.00

A charming 18th-century French hand-colored engraving depicting a gentleman in a garden scene, seated before an elaborate fountain pavilion. The architectural backdrop, flowing water, and lush trees evoke the refined leisure and elegance of the Rococo period. Beneath the image, a poetic inscription in French adds a romantic literary element, typical of decorative engravings of this era.

Engravings such as this were popular in 18th-century France, often sold as decorative prints to be displayed in homes or bound into albums. They frequently combined architecture, garden design, and figures of fashionable society, reflecting both cultural ideals and the artistry of the engraver. The hand-coloring enhances the scene with delicate tones of blue, green, and ochre.

This example is preserved in its original giltwood frame, lending authenticity and charm. The frame shows age wear and losses, consistent with its 200+ years of history, which only adds to its antique character.
