Petite Tortoiseshell Box with Silver-Plated Decorative Mount

A small box with a beautifully detailed presence, this piece pairs warm tortoiseshell coloring with a contrasting silver-plated ornament. Its softly rounded square form is topped with an applied decorative plaque, where raised scrollwork surrounds a central motif.

Amber and dark brown markings bring depth to the body, while the cooler metalwork introduces a finely worked focal point. The removable lid reveals a compact interior, giving this little object the intimate scale of something once kept close at hand.

Its design recalls the tradition of ornamental pocket boxes, where useful containers became opportunities for decorative craftsmanship. The precise original purpose is unconfirmed, though its proportions are suited to the category of small personal or snuff boxes.

Lovely among a grouping of antique boxes or displayed beside a miniature portrait, this piece adds a considered detail to a bedside table or writing desk.
