Pair of Gilt Bronze Escutcheon Plates with Green Man Mythological Motifs — Late 19th Century, France

Sale price$185.00

This pair of French cast bronze escutcheons is richly ornamented with classical mascarons, a traditional decorative motif long used in European furniture and architectural design. Each escutcheon features an expressive human face framed by stylized foliage and scrolling forms, drawing inspiration from the Green Man—a historic symbol associated with nature, renewal, protection, and continuity. Rather than depicting a specific individual, these figures reflect the influence of ancient Roman theatrical masks and Renaissance grotesques, later embraced throughout French decorative arts.

The elongated forms are accented with finely textured panels, scrolling crests, and circular key apertures, while the lower terminals are adorned with sculptural mascaron heads and delicate drop finials. Such bronzes were commonly mounted beneath keyholes on armoires, commodes, and grand doors, serving both a functional purpose and a symbolic one—believed to guard and embellish the home.

The quality of casting, depth of relief, and warm gilt patina are characteristic of 19th-century French decorative design, particularly during the Empire and Napoleon III periods, when classical ornamentation was reinterpreted with dramatic elegance. Presented as a matching pair, these escutcheons offer a rare opportunity to incorporate authentic French bronze detailing into an interior, whether installed as intended or displayed as sculptural accents in their own right.

A striking and storied set, carrying both visual presence and historical resonance—an enduring example of how artistry and symbolism were woven into the everyday architecture of the home.
