Pair of Architectural Engravings of Bruges Churches

Sale price$995.00

A fascinating pairing of architectural views, these colored engravings depict two important churches in Bruges, Belgium: the former Cathedral of St Donatian and the Church of St Saviour, now St Saviour’s Cathedral. Delicate linework describes their towers, Gothic windows, and surrounding structures, while softly colored skies and matching dark frames create an elegant presentation.

The upper view is captioned “Ecclesia Cathedralis S. Donatiani,” identifying St Donatian’s Cathedral. Once standing on the Burg square, this church served as the seat of the bishop of Bruges from 1559 until the end of the Ancien Régime. It was demolished in 1799, making historical images especially valuable records of a building that no longer survives.

The lower view bears the caption “Ecclesia Sancti Salvatoris Brugis,” meaning the Church of St Saviour in Bruges. Originally a parish church, St Saviour’s received cathedral status in 1834 when the bishopric was re-established. Its later history included alterations to the tower, so this view preserves an earlier architectural appearance.

Engravings with these titles are associated with Antonius Sanderus’s Flandria Illustrata, the richly illustrated historical survey of Flanders first published in the 1640s and issued again in later editions. The exact edition and printing date of these particular sheets have not been confirmed.

Together, the views offer a compelling record of Bruges’s religious and architectural history. Their appeal lies both in the beauty of the buildings and in the relationship between a lost cathedral and the church that eventually assumed its role.

Lovely displayed together in a study, hallway, or gallery wall, they bring a distinctive connection to one of Belgium’s most celebrated historic cities.
