Pair of 19th-Century Bronze Candlesticks with Lion-Mask Supports
A commanding pair of 19th-century bronze candlesticks, these pieces combine tall fluted shafts with sculptural lion-mask supports and sweeping tripod bases. Leaf-shaped upper rims introduce a softer decorative flourish, while the warm metallic surfaces give the pair a rich, architectural presence.
The design draws upon the classical tradition of columnar forms, animal ornament, and tripod supports. Such motifs appeared repeatedly in European decorative arts, particularly within neoclassical design and the revivals that continued throughout the 19th century.
Fluting brings rhythm to the upright shafts, recalling the treatment of classical columns. Below, the lion masks introduce expressive sculptural detail, while curved legs descend toward substantial feet. Together, these elements create a balance between vertical restraint and a more dramatic foundation.
Candlesticks were essential household objects before electric lighting became widespread, but finely ornamented examples also contributed to the arrangement and character of a room. Displayed in pairs, they offered symmetry on dining tables, mantelpieces, and consoles.
These examples remain beautifully suited to that tradition. Whether placed on either side of a portrait or displayed together on a dining table, they bring height, warm color, and distinctive classical detail to the home.
