Pair of 18th C. Italian Baroque Hand Carved Giltwood Framed Mirrors
A beautiful pair of antique Italian giltwood mirrors, each surrounded by an exuberantly carved frame of scrolling foliage, pierced details, and dramatic architectural flourishes. Their richly aged gilding has developed wonderful depth over time, with areas of exposed ground and darker patination emphasizing the hand-carved details.
The pair has the wonderfully imperfect character we look for in early decorative pieces—the frames are closely related yet retain subtle variations that speak to their handmade construction. Their petite scale makes them especially versatile, whether hung together, flanking a larger work of art, or incorporated individually into a collected gallery wall.
The reverse of the frames is particularly charming, retaining old paper backing made from printed period pages and remnants of earlier repairs, offering a glimpse into the pieces’ history and construction.
