Napoleon Bonaparte — Baptism of the King of Rome Commemorative Medal
A striking piece of Napoleonic imagery, this large commemorative medal pairs a laureate profile of Napoleon Bonaparte with an elaborate scene celebrating the baptism of his son, the King of Rome.
On one face, Napoleon’s classical profile rises against an uncluttered ground. The opposite face depicts the emperor holding the infant above a baptismal font, surrounded by ceremonial furnishings and imperial symbolism. The inscription “BAPTEME DU ROI DE ROME” identifies the occasion, with the Roman-numeral date MDCCCXI referring to 1811.
The design is associated with medal engraver Bertrand Andrieu and designer Louis Lafitte. Its sculptural relief and warm patinated surface give it the presence of a miniature historical monument.
A compelling addition to a library or collection of French historical objects, this medal rewards display on both sides. The commemorated date identifies its subject; the production date of this particular example remains unconfirmed.
