18th/19th Century Miniature Portrait of a Gentleman in Uniform
A finely painted miniature portrait depicting a gentleman in aristocratic attire, adorned with the blue sash and star of a distinguished order. Painted in delicate watercolor on ivory (or early wafer), this work displays the elegance and refinement characteristic of late 18th–early 19th century miniature portraiture.
Miniatures such as this were prized personal treasures, commissioned to commemorate loved ones, rulers, or esteemed figures. They were often worn in lockets, set into boxes, or displayed in small frames, serving as both intimate keepsakes and status symbols in an era before photography.
This example is signed “J. Caron” at the lower right, marking it as the work of a skilled miniature artist. Presented in a later square wooden frame, the portrait is set behind a gilt brass bezel. The reverse is lined with French text, adding an extra layer of historic charm.
