19th-Century Miniature Portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven, Signed H. Duran

Sale price$195.00

This finely painted 19th-century portrait miniature captures the likeness of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827), one of history’s greatest composers. Executed with remarkable precision on ivory (or thin composition panel), the work is signed H. Duran, a skilled miniaturist known for his delicate brushwork and refined use of color.

Set within a circular ormolu-mounted frame and housed in a carved wooden surround, the portrait depicts Beethoven in a blue coat with a white cravat and brown scarf, holding a sheet of music—a classic representation emphasizing his enduring genius and revolutionary contributions to classical music.

Portrait miniatures of celebrated figures such as Beethoven were highly sought after in the 19th century, particularly during the Romantic era when admiration for great composers, poets, and thinkers reached new heights. They served both as personal keepsakes and as collectible objects, embodying cultural reverence and artistic skill in equal measure.
