“Latona & the Lycian Peasants” — French Mythological Etching by Jean-Baptiste Scotin after Jean Jouvenet, Published by Joseph Limosin, in an Ornate Gold-Finished Frame

Sale price$350.00

A captivating example of French classical printmaking, this beautifully detailed mythological etching depicts the dramatic story of Latona and the Lycian peasants, a celebrated tale from ancient Roman mythology. Engraved by Jean-Baptiste Scotin after a composition by the distinguished French painter Jean Jouvenet and bearing the publishing credit of Joseph Limosin, this remarkable work brings together the artistry, mythology, and classical elegance that defined French academic art.

The scene originates from Metamorphoses, the celebrated collection of mythological tales written by the Roman poet Ovid in the first century AD. According to the legend, Latona, known in Greek mythology as Leto, was the mother of the divine twins Apollo and Diana. While traveling through the region of Lycia with her children, she approached a pond seeking water to quench her thirst. The local peasants cruelly refused her request and deliberately stirred the water into mud, preventing her from drinking. In response, Latona invoked her divine powers and transformed the peasants into frogs, condemning them to live forever in the waters they had denied her.

This extraordinary tale became a beloved subject among European artists, particularly during the Baroque period, when dramatic mythological narratives provided opportunities to explore movement, emotion, and the consequences of human behavior. The story also carried a moral lesson about compassion, hospitality, and the punishment of cruelty.

Jean Jouvenet (1644–1717) was one of France's most accomplished Baroque painters, celebrated for his grand historical and religious compositions. Working during the reign of Louis XIV, Jouvenet became closely associated with the French Royal Academy and was admired for his expressive figures, dramatic arrangements, and masterful storytelling. His compositions were frequently reproduced through engravings, allowing his celebrated imagery to reach audiences far beyond the original paintings.

Jean-Baptiste Scotin belonged to a family of French engravers active during the late 17th and 18th centuries. Through the art of reproductive printmaking, engravers such as Scotin translated important paintings and drawings into finely detailed printed works, preserving and circulating the artistic achievements of their contemporaries. The publishing credit of Joseph Limosin further connects this engraving to the historical French print trade.

Mythological engravings were particularly fashionable in European interiors, where they were collected as expressions of artistic refinement, classical education, and cultural sophistication. Such works adorned libraries, studies, salons, and private collections, inviting viewers to appreciate both the beauty of the composition and the ancient stories it represented.

Presented in an ornate gold-finished frame, this wonderful engraving retains the timeless grandeur of French classical artistry. Its richly layered narrative and historical associations make it a striking addition to a traditional study, collected gallery wall, or thoughtfully curated interior filled with European antiques.

A remarkable piece for admirers of French printmaking, classical mythology, and the enduring beauty of historical works on paper.
