1876 Norwegian Hymnal “Kirke Salmebog” in Brass-Clad Binding
A rare and beautifully preserved 19th-century Norwegian hymnal, Kirke Salmebog, compiled and edited by M. B. Landstad and printed in Christiania (Oslo) by Jacob Dybwad in 1876. Landstad, a well-known clergyman, folklorist, and hymn writer, played a central role in shaping Norwegian liturgical tradition, making this volume historically and spiritually important.
This copy is housed in a decorative black leather binding with brass edging and clasp. The covers are stamped in gilt with ornate motifs, including a chalice and symbolic medallion. On the back cover, the date “28 April 1878” is embossed in gold, suggesting it was a presentation or commemorative gift, possibly for a confirmation, wedding, or special church occasion.
Inside, the pages remain intact and legible, with the title page bearing the year 1876. The hymnal would have been a treasured possession, carried to church services and used for personal devotion.
