Giltwood Holy Water Font with Devotional Medallion C. 1930-1950

Sale price$165.00

This hand-carved giltwood holy water font carries with it both devotional meaning and timeless European charm. Originating in France or Italy around 1930–1950, the piece reflects a long-standing tradition of keeping bénitiers (holy water fonts) in private homes, placed by a doorway or bedside for daily blessing.

Its form draws inspiration from Baroque design, with scrolling curves, floral flourishes, and a luminous gilded surface that has aged with a soft patina. At its center rests a devotional medallion, once surrounded by a small basin that would have held holy water for use in the home.

The reverse reveals its authentic construction: carved wood layered with gesso and gilt, showing tool marks and wear consistent with nearly a century of use.
