French Art Nouveau Bronze Figural Tray with Reclining Nude and Octopus, Circa 1895–1910
A wonderfully sculptural French bronze tray from the Art Nouveau period, featuring an enchanting maritime scene of a reclining mermaid beside a dramatically modeled octopus. Flowing lines, organic contours, and the mermaid’s cascading hair give the piece the unmistakable movement and naturalistic character associated with the Art Nouveau aesthetic.
The composition is worked in relief across the surface, with the octopus forming one of the integrated handles and the mermaid positioned along the opposite side. The warm, aged bronze surface has developed a beautiful patina that emphasizes the depth and detail of the casting.
Signed to the lower edge, this is as much a small work of decorative sculpture as it is a functional tray—beautiful styled on a coffee table, dressing table, or collected among other antique bronzes.
Measurements: 10.75" L x 7.5" W x 1.75" H
Condition Notes:
Antique condition consistent with age and use. The bronze exhibits a naturally aged surface with patination, oxidation, tonal variation, and areas of rubbing throughout. Minor surface marks and wear are present, particularly along raised details and edges. No major damage is apparent from the photographs. Please review all images closely for condition details.
