Framed French First World War Military Citation, 1916

Sale price$225.00

A moving record of individual service during the First World War, this framed French military citation combines handwritten commendation with finely illustrated martial imagery. A soldier sounding a bugle occupies the lower left, while a Croix de Guerre, leafy branches, and a ribbon motif crown the document.

Headed “Citation à l’Ordre de la Brigade,” the certificate records a commendation at brigade level. It names Pierre Chansaud, as the handwriting appears to read, with the rank of sous-lieutenant, or second lieutenant, serving in the 356th Infantry Regiment.

The handwritten account describes his conduct on March 21, 1916, during a very violent bombardment. It praises his continued presence in the front line, his support for the morale of the lookouts, and the measures he took to counter an enemy attack. The certified extract is dated April 6, 1916.

France established the Croix de Guerre in 1915 to recognize wartime citations. Different devices on its ribbon indicated the level of the commendation, with a bronze star associated with citations at brigade or regimental level. The medal depicted on this certificate places the individual commendation within that broader system of recognition.

The printer’s line identifies Charles-Lavauzelle of Paris and Limoges, linking the document to French military publishing. Handwritten entries, a regimental stamp, and a signature give the printed design its personal historical significance.

Presented in an ornamental gold-tone frame, this piece preserves a specific moment of courage and leadership amid the immense upheaval of the First World War. It would make a meaningful addition to a collection of historical documents or French military memorabilia.
