Framed Collection of Six 19th-Century Intaglio Impressions

A beautiful collection of 19th-century intaglio impressions, these six pale casts feature classical figural subjects arranged against a textured neutral ground. Their varied oval shapes create a balanced composition within a broad, richly worn gold-tone frame.

Intaglios are images engraved into gemstones or other materials. Impressions taken from their recessed surfaces reproduce the designs in relief, allowing collectors to study intricate details without possessing the original carved stones.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, collections of gem impressions became popular among scholars, connoisseurs, and travelers undertaking the Grand Tour. Frequently acquired in Italy, they offered a portable connection to classical antiquity and the celebrated collections encountered abroad.

This set reflects that appreciation for miniature works of art. Each impression invites close examination, while their arrangement allows the individual subjects to become part of a cohesive decorative display. The pale casting material contrasts beautifully with the woven backing and warm frame.

Lovely in a library, study, or layered gallery wall, this collection brings the curiosity and classical taste of 19th-century collecting into the home.
