French Agricultural Award Plaque — Concours d’Animaux de Viande, 1987

Sale price$140.00

An authentic relic of rural France, this cast-iron agricultural award plaque was once proudly displayed at a livestock competition in the small commune of Pré-en-Pail, located in northwestern France. Dated 1987, it was awarded at the Concours d’Animaux de Viande — a regional meat and livestock show celebrating excellence in animal breeding and husbandry.

Hand-painted in warm tones of ochre and white, the plaque bears the raised lettering “Grand Prix d’Honneur”, marking it as a top honor within its category. These plaques were traditionally mounted to stable doors, farm gates, or display boards, serving as enduring symbols of craftsmanship, pride, and rural prestige.

Today, it makes a charming accent piece — whether hung on a kitchen wall, layered into a gallery display, or styled on a bookshelf among antique books and French ironstone. A rare piece of countryside history turned art.
