Collection of Nine 19th-Century Classical Intaglio Impressions in a Gold-Tone Frame

Sale price$650.00

A beautiful collection of 19th-century intaglio impressions, these nine pale casts feature classical portrait profiles and figural scenes arranged against a textured neutral ground. Eight smaller oval impressions surround a larger central composition, creating a balanced display within a richly worn gold-tone frame.

Intaglios are designs engraved into gemstones or other materials. Impressions taken from these recessed carvings reproduce their intricate imagery in relief, allowing the smallest details to be studied and admired without handling the original stone.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, collections of gem impressions became desirable acquisitions for scholars, collectors, and travelers undertaking the Grand Tour. Often purchased in Italy, these collections offered a tangible connection to classical antiquity, bringing portraits, mythological subjects, and celebrated compositions into private collections throughout Europe.

This collection belongs to that 19th-century tradition of appreciating classical imagery through finely detailed casts. The individual profiles invite close observation, while the larger central scene creates a striking focal point. Their pale surfaces contrast beautifully with the woven backing and warm frame, emphasizing the sculptural character of each impression.

Displayed in a library, study, or thoughtfully layered gallery wall, this collection brings the enduring fascination with classical art into the home.
