Brass Stamp Box with Rococo Scrollwork

Sale price$195.00

A richly ornamented brass stamp box, this piece features sweeping scrolls, shell-like forms, and finely textured details across its hinged lid. Its shaped outline echoes the flowing decoration, creating a lively composition with a warm, luminous surface.

The ornament recalls Rococo design, which emerged in 18th-century France and favored movement, natural forms, and imaginative curves. Shells and scrolling foliage became defining motifs, appearing across furniture, metalwork, and smaller decorative accessories.

Here, that vocabulary is expressed through raised curves and patterned recesses. Light catches the smoother sections while darker tones settle within the detail, giving the lid depth and emphasizing its sculptural character.

Stamp boxes belonged to the well-appointed writing desk, offering a place to keep postage readily available for correspondence. This example combines that practical role with a particularly expressive decorative surface.

Its exact production date and country of manufacture remain unidentified. Rococo ornament continued through later revivals, so the historical style alone does not establish an 18th-century date.

Lovely displayed beside a letter opener or antique correspondence, this box could also hold a few small keepsakes while bringing the richness of ornamental brasswork into the home.
