Era & Origin:

Published 1862 | Paris, France

Leather-bound book with gilt crest and marbled endpapers

Details & History:

A beautifully preserved 19th-century French religious volume, Voyage de La Trappe à Rome by Reverend Father Marie-Joseph de Géramb, printed in Paris by Adrien Le Clere et Cie in 1862. Bound in richly mottled calf leather, the cover bears a gilt-embossed crest and delicate tooling around the borders — a testament to fine Parisian bookbinding traditions of the era.

The book recounts the author’s pilgrimage from the Trappist Abbey of La Trappe to Rome, offering spiritual reflection and vivid travel impressions rooted in deep devotion. Works such as this one bridged faith and culture, revealing the intellectual life of French clergy amid the 19th century’s religious renewal.

Inside, the pages retain a beautiful aged patina, scattered foxing, and original typography — hallmarks of authenticity and time-worn grace. Whether read or displayed, this piece embodies the soulful elegance of early ecclesiastical printmaking.

Condition Notes:

Very good antique condition with light wear to leather and foxing to pages, consistent with age. Binding tight and intact.

Styling Notes:

Perfectly suited for a desk, library shelf, or beneath a glass cloche as part of a layered vignette. Pair with inkwells, early prints, or religious relics for an evocative display of European history.
