Antique Baccarat Highball Book Tantilus

Sale price$1,500.00

France, Late 19th – Early 20th Century

A rare and wonderfully theatrical example of Belle Époque barware, this Baccarat crystal tantalus set is cleverly concealed within a sculptural faux book case—designed to resemble a stack of grand 18th and 19th century French leather-bound volumes. Once closed, it appears as an antique library treasure; when opened, it reveals six exquisitely cut crystal tumblers resting inside a velvet-lined interior.

Each glass is stamped Baccarat on the base, confirming its origin from one of France’s most celebrated crystal houses, founded in 1764 and long favored by European royalty and high society. Tantalus sets such as this were traditionally placed in gentlemen’s libraries, private studies, and salons—where prized spirits were kept both beautifully displayed and cleverly protected.

The case itself is richly detailed with gilt tooling, faux spine titles including Histoire de France and Consulat 1799–1804, and deep patinated “leather” finishes that give it the presence of an antique bibliophile’s collection. Inside, the original red velvet lining creates a dramatic contrast against the brilliance of the crystal.

Condition

Excellent antique condition. All six glasses are intact with no chips or cracks. The case shows light surface wear consistent with age, adding to its authentic library patina.

All 6 glasses are stamped - Baccarat
