19th Century Tortoiseshell and Brass Mounted Presentation Box

Sale price$285.00

This exquisite antique ring box captures the refined elegance of the 19th century, crafted from richly mottled tortoiseshell veneer and finished with brass mounts. Its warm, glowing surface shifts in tone from honeyed amber to deep mahogany, a natural beauty that made tortoiseshell one of the most prized luxury materials of its age.

During the 19th century, tortoiseshell was a luxury material prized for its glowing mottled pattern and durability. Small caskets like this were often used to present rings, keepsakes, or miniature tokens of affection. Because genuine tortoiseshell trade was banned internationally in the 1970s, antique examples carry both historical value and rarity today.

The hinged lid opens to reveal the original textile-lined interior, once used to cradle a cherished ring or small keepsake. Compact yet opulent, pieces like this were often exchanged as tokens of affection or used for jewelry presentation — making them timeless symbols of love and refinement.
