Antique Theatrical Crown – M.C. Lilley & Co., Columbus, Ohio (c. late 19th–early 20th century)

Sale price$450.00

A dazzling relic of American stage history, this antique theatrical crown was produced by the famed M.C. Lilley & Co. of Columbus, Ohio, a company established in 1865 and widely celebrated for supplying regalia and costumes to theaters, pageants, and fraternal organizations alike.

Designed to evoke the grandeur of royalty beneath the stage lights, the crown is richly constructed with:

  • Gilded metal filigree frame in repeating ornamental motifs, designed to shimmer dramatically under gaslight or early stage lighting.
  • Crimson velvet cap, ruched for fullness, with a pleated satin lining stamped with the Lilley & Co. insignia.
  • Colorful glass “jewels” in green, amber, and ruby tones, set into ornate mounts to mimic the brilliance of precious stones.
  • Leather banding at the interior for wearability during extended performance use.

Unlike purely ceremonial regalia, this piece was created to be both visually commanding and durable for stage use, worn by actors in historical plays, operettas, or pageants that required the presence of a king, noble, or allegorical figure.

Details

  • Maker: M.C. Lilley & Co., Columbus, Ohio
  • Date: c. 1885–1920
  • Materials: Gilded brass, velvet, satin, glass jewels, leather
  • Condition: Well-preserved with age-appropriate wear; velvet shows light fading, leather band retains patina, and gilded metal with mild surface wear consistent with stage use.

This crown captures the romantic spirit of early American theater—a rare and evocative costume artifact that bridges decorative art, performance history, and antique regalia. Perfect as a display piece or conversation starter, it offers a glimpse into the pageantry of a bygone era.

⚠️ Condition Note: There is a visible break along the lower gilt frame of the crown (pictured). The structure remains stable for display, and this imperfection is consistent with age and use. It does not detract from the overall decorative presence of the piece but is noted for accuracy. ⚠️
