19th-Century Signed Porcelain Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte

A striking example of 19th-century portraiture on porcelain, this signed miniature depicts Napoleon Bonaparte wearing a green military coat with gold-colored epaulettes and decorative insignia. His recognizable profile is softly modeled against a pale background, while an ornamental gold-tone surround and substantial black frame give the small portrait a commanding presence.

Napoleon’s likeness remained an enduring subject in European art throughout the 19th century. Following his death in 1821, portraits and commemorative objects continued to reflect the fascination with his military career, imperial reign, and place in French history. His image appeared across paintings, prints, sculpture, and decorative wares.

Miniature portraits offered an intimate way to collect these historical likenesses. Porcelain provided a smooth surface suited to finely rendered features, allowing artists to capture expressive faces and intricate costume details on a small scale.

In this example, the contrast between the pale face, richly colored uniform, and dark outer frame draws the eye toward the portrait. A signature is visible beside the figure, although the artist’s identity has not been confidently established.

Beautiful displayed in a library, study, or grouping of miniature portraits, this piece brings a distinctive historical presence to a thoughtfully collected interior.
