19th-Century Madonna and Child Devotional Relief in Gilt Frame

Sale price$195.00

A beautifully detailed devotional relief depicting the crowned Virgin Mary holding the crowned Christ Child, surrounded by leafy branches with two figures kneeling in prayer below. The pale relief contrasts softly with its warm gilt oval frame, while convex glass gives the miniature scene depth.

The composition appears to represent Our Lady of Montaigu, also known as Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel, a Belgian Marian devotion associated with an image of the Virgin in an oak tree. This connection gives particular meaning to the branches framing the figures.

A lovely expression of personal faith and miniature craftsmanship, suited to a small easel, an intimate gallery wall, or a collection of devotional objects.

Era: 19th century I
Origin: Continental European; likely associated with Belgian Marian devotion
Materials: Pale relief, possibly meerschaum or pipe clay, with gilt-finished frame and convex glass
Subject: Madonna and Child with kneeling worshippers; likely Our Lady of Montaigu
Condition: Good antique condition with light age-related wear to the frame and glazing.
