19th-Century Glass & Bronze Table Lamp with Gold Silk Shade

A beautiful marriage of light, texture, and sculptural ornament, this 19th-century lamp features a clear patterned glass body embellished with bronze accents and raised floral garlands. Slender ornamental supports descend toward a circular marble base, while a pleated gold silk shade completes its elegant silhouette.

During the 19th century, domestic lighting became an increasingly expressive part of interior decoration. Lamps combined practical illumination with the ornamental richness of the surrounding room, bringing together glass, stone, and finely worked metal in designs intended to be admired even when unlit.

This example recalls that tradition through its urn-like form and carefully layered decoration. The geometric patterning of the upper glass body contrasts with the elongated detailing below, while floral swags soften the composition. The bronze supports give the lamp an architectural presence, drawing the eye from the decorated vessel to its pale marble foundation.

Its garlands and ordered proportions reflect the enduring influence of French neoclassical design, which continued through 19th-century revivals. The precise country of manufacture and maker remain unidentified.

The gold silk shade introduces a warm textile element, its close pleating complementing the repeated patterns of the glass and metalwork. Newly rewired, the lamp brings its historical character into present-day use without losing the decorative appeal of its antique form.

Lovely on a console, bedside table, or writing desk, it offers a graceful focal point and a warm finishing touch to a thoughtfully collected room.
