A beautiful example of 19th-century devotional art, this framed wooden crucifix features a pale sculptural figure of Christ upon a gold-finished cross, set against a warm brown wooden panel. The ornamental gold-tone frame surrounds the composition with sweeping detail, lending depth and presence to this intimate religious piece.

Throughout 19th-century Europe, crucifixes held an important place in Catholic homes, chapels, and religious communities. Smaller examples provided a focus for personal prayer and contemplation, bringing sacred imagery into daily life.

The bowed head, crown of thorns, and carefully modeled loincloth reflect the established artistic traditions of the Passion. Above the figure, the INRI tablet bears the customary abbreviation of the Latin inscription meaning “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”

The pale figure contrasts beautifully with the golden cross and darker backing, emphasizing its sculptural form. Its material remains unconfirmed. Although believed to be Bakelite or a related resin, that identification would suggest a later figure added to the 19th-century wooden ensemble, rather than an original 19th-century Bakelite component.
