19th Century Maison Alphonse Giroux Tea Caddy with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay
This exquisite tea caddy is a signed work by Maison Alphonse Giroux, Paris — one of the most prestigious luxury retailers of the 19th century, often compared to Tiffany in New York or Asprey in London. Founded around 1799 by François-Simon-Alphonse Giroux, the maison specialized in objets de luxe, supplying the Parisian elite, aristocracy, and even royalty. Their creations, admired for their artistry and refinement, were showcased at world exhibitions and remain highly collectible today.
Crafted circa 1820–1850, this caddy displays exceptional craftsmanship. The exterior is richly veneered in warm walnut, decorated with an intricate parquetry design of mother-of-pearl quatrefoil inlay that catches the light beautifully. The hinged lid opens to reveal two fitted ebony lids framed with gilt detail, designed to hold precious loose-leaf teas, which in the 19th century were considered a luxury commodity.
Inside, a brass plaque bears the maker’s mark: “MAISON ALPH. GIROUX, PARIS”, confirming its authenticity as a Giroux piece.
Condition
This caddy remains in beautiful condition with its inlay and veneer intact and a rich patina that speaks to its age. The only note is that the two interior lids show a natural bowing, consistent with age, which does not detract from the overall elegance or usability of the piece.
