19th-Century Black Forest Hunting Barometer and Thermometer
A richly carved wall barometer crowned by a hunting dog’s head, with suspended game birds, leafy branches, and hunting equipment arranged around the circular dial. Deep relief and pierced details give the wooden surround remarkable dimension, while the thermometer above adds to its character as a domestic weather instrument.
The design belongs to the hunting-themed carving tradition commonly known as Black Forest work, closely associated with the workshops of Brienz, Switzerland. Its French-language weather indications suggest production for a French-speaking market. Comparable carved barometers date to the late 19th century.
A striking addition to a library, entryway, or country-house interior, combining sculptural craftsmanship with the history of household weather forecasting.
