18th-Century Italian Rococo Commode with Original Painted Finish
An exquisite 18th-century Italian Rococo commode, radiating Old World romance with every curve and carving. This authentic two-drawer piece showcases the craftsmanship and decorative flair of Northern Italy—its sculptural bombe form, hand-carved detailing, and richly layered painted finish are a testament to centuries-old artistry.
The serpentine front is framed by a dramatic central cartouche and ornate latticework panels, all rendered in deep relief and softened by timeworn pigments. Muted tones of slate, ochre, charcoal, and pale blue dance across the surface, revealing traces of the original paint and raw wood beneath—a naturally distressed patina that can’t be replicated.
Its two full drawers are generously scaled and function smoothly. Notably, the drawer construction features hand-cut dovetail joints—a definitive hallmark of 18th-century craftsmanship. These irregular, slightly sloped joints confirm the piece was made before industrial joinery methods took hold in the 19th century.
The commode retains its original hardware and escutcheons, with a tassel-adorned keyhole at center.
Please note: the bottom drawer does not lock, though the decorative plate and form remain intact.
