18th Century Engraving After Charles Coypel - Mythological Scene c. 1720-1740

Sale price$230.00

This finely detailed 18th century French engraving depicts a lush mythological landscape after a painting by Charles Coypel (1694–1752), court painter to Louis XV and celebrated for his theatrical subjects. The print was engraved by Jean-Baptiste Scotin (1678–1742), whose mastery of copperplate brought the elegance of Coypel’s compositions to collectors across Enlightenment Europe.

The scene presents a reclining nude figure, attended by putti and set within a wooded glade alive with movement and classical symbolism. A decorative border of foliage frames the composition, enhancing its Rococo sensibility.

Historical Context

During the 18th century, engravings such as this allowed grand mythological canvases to be enjoyed in more intimate settings. Coypel, known for designing tapestries and court commissions, was one of the most widely reproduced painters of his day, his works translated into engravings for collectors and scholars alike.
