1887 French Roman Missal with Ornate Metal Clasp

Sale price$195.00

An intimate piece of French devotional history, this leather-bound Roman missal features a beautifully elaborate metal clasp extending across its front cover. Scrolling foliage, small floral details, and pierced ornament create a striking contrast against the deep burgundy-brown leather.

Published in Tours by Alfred Mame et Fils in 1887, the book is titled Missel romain à l’usage des fidèles, or Roman Missal for the Use of the Faithful. Intended to accompany Catholic worship, a personal missal allowed its owner to follow the prayers and services of the Mass.

Inside, an ornamented title page frames the text with religious imagery, architectural details, and the symbols of the Evangelists. A decorative handwritten ownership page names Madame Léontine Chapouard and records an address in Montélimar, adding a particularly personal layer to this devotional volume.

With its gilt page edges, textured leather, and ornate closure, this piece is beautiful displayed among religious antiques, beside a crucifix, or within a collection of finely bound books.
