1867 French “Paroissien Romain” Prayer Book — Gilt-Decorated Leather Binding with Ornamental Clasp

Sale price$195.00

A beautiful example of 19th-century French devotional publishing, this Paroissien Romain was published in Tours by Alfred Mame et Fils in 1867. Its warm brown leather binding features a graceful gilt centerpiece, delicate botanical corner ornaments, and a raised-band spine. An ornamental gold-tone clasp and luminous gilt page edges complete its elegant presentation.

The title page identifies the volume as containing the services for every Sunday and the principal feast days of the year, presented in Latin and French. Designed for Catholic worshippers, books of this kind allowed readers to follow the Latin liturgy alongside a French translation, bringing the rhythms of the church year into a personal, portable volume.

The publishing house of Mame was closely associated with religious books in 19th-century France, producing editions ranging from simple devotional works to richly decorated volumes. This example’s finely ornamented binding reflects the care given to books intended for frequent use and lasting appreciation.

Inside, a decorative border frames the title page, which records approval by Joseph-Hippolyte Guibert, Archbishop of Tours. The combination of its dated imprint, supple-looking leather, and restrained gilt ornament makes this a lovely addition to a collection of antique books or devotional objects.
