ribbed-ceramic-marbalized-pyrogene
Ribbed Ceramic Marbalized Pyrogène

A charming accessory from the history of everyday lighting, this pyrogène features a warm brown ceramic body with closely spaced horizontal ribs and a broad silver-tone base. Its gently tapered silhouette pairs practical design with an appealing contrast of texture and finish.

Pyrogène is the French term used for a match holder incorporating a surface upon which matches could be struck. Examples appeared in homes and cafés, keeping matches readily available for lighting lamps, candles, and smoking materials.

The ribbed exterior belongs to that practical design tradition, providing texture around the receptacle. Its opening held a supply of matches, while the broad lower base gave the object a stable presence on a table or counter.

The combination of ceramic and bright metal gives this example particular charm. The warm, finely ridged body contrasts with the smooth base, creating a small object that feels both useful and thoughtfully composed.

Its form recalls match strikers associated with the late 19th and early 20th centuries, although the precise date, maker, and country of manufacture remain unverified. The base is described as silver-tone rather than solid silver without supporting marks.

Lovely displayed beside a candle or incorporated into a collection of antique smoking accessories, it preserves the appeal of a once-familiar tabletop object.

Era: Undated; form associated with late 19th–early 20th-century match strikers
Origin: Exact country of manufacture unverified
Materials: Brown glazed ceramic, apparently stoneware, with a silver-tone metal base; metal composition unverified
Design: Tapered ribbed match receptacle on a broad circular base
Original Purpose: Holding and striking matches
Condition: Good previously loved condition.
