french-dubonnet-advertising-match-striker
French Dubonnet Advertising Match Striker

Cream-colored ceramic and faded blue-gray lettering give this French advertising match striker a wonderfully timeworn character. Its broad base promotes Dubonnet, while a finely ribbed upper section surrounds the central opening originally intended to hold matches.

Known in France as a pyrogène, this practical accessory combined match storage with a textured striking surface. Advertising examples brought a brand directly onto the café or bar counter, turning an everyday object into a lasting piece of commercial design.

The lettering includes “Vin au Quinquina,” referring to the quinine-flavored wine aperitif, alongside a “Grand Prix 1900” reference. An underside mark reads “L. Astorgis — Paris,” providing a further connection to its French commercial history. The award date supports a date of 1900 or later, rather than establishing an exact manufacturing year.

Beautiful beside a candle or incorporated into a collection of French barware, it offers both sculptural texture and a small glimpse into the rituals of café life.

Details

• Origin: France; underside marked Paris
• Period: Likely early twentieth century, circa 1900–1930; exact date unconfirmed
• Material: Glazed ceramic with a textured, unglazed striking section
• Form: Tabletop match holder and striker, or pyrogène
• Advertising: Dubonnet
• Inscriptions: “Dubonnet,” “Vin au Quinquina,” and “Grand Prix 1900”
• Underside mark: “L.
