Crossed red chains stand out against its gold-toned field, and the ribbon beneath reads Fantoni di Firenze. The fine grain of the white leather remains visible around the painted arms, lending texture to the warm, aged ground.

Eight additional shields bear the names Mantova, Varallo, Torino, Piacenza, Padova, Milano, Pavia, and Siena. Below them, an Italian inscription traces the family’s earliest recorded presence to Florence in the early 1100s and mentions the peace of Cardinal Latino in 1280. Colored initials and fine red rules give the passage the character of an illuminated manuscript.

A deep wooden frame with traces of a gold-toned finish sets off the vivid blues and reds. The detail is especially rewarding up close, whether displayed on a library shelf or hung among portraits and architectural engravings.

Details

• Origin — Italian subject and inscription.
