19th-century-glass-jardiniere-with-classical-figural-mounts
19th-Century Glass Jardinière with Classical Figural Mounts

An elegant example of 19th-century decorative display, this glass jardinière features a gently shaped, elongated body supported within an ornate gold-tone metal framework. Classical draped figures and small childlike figures decorate the sides, while a central wreath tied with a ribbon gives the composition a graceful focal point.

Jardinières brought plants and flowers into furnished interiors through containers designed to be admired as part of the room. During the 19th century, makers produced examples in ceramic, glass, and metal, often combining practical planting or floral display with elaborate ornament.

This piece draws upon the enduring appeal of neoclassical design. Drapery, wreaths, ribbons, and carefully ordered borders recall the decorative language inspired by ancient Greece and Rome and revisited throughout later European interiors.

The transparent body allows the metalwork to remain visually prominent without making the vessel feel heavy. Its shaped outline and ornamental feet give it a sculptural presence, while the raised figures reward closer attention.

Beautiful as a centerpiece or placed upon a console, it offers a lovely setting for a modest floral arrangement. An appropriate removable liner would allow flowers to be displayed while protecting the antique vessel.

Era: 19th century
Origin: Exact country of manufacture unverified; French neoclassical design influence
Materials: Clear glass with gold-tone metal framework and mounts; metal alloy and gilding method unverified
Design: Elongated jardinière with classical figures, wreath-and-ribbon ornament, and decorative feet
Original Purpose: Decorative plant or floral display
Condition: Good antique condition with light surface wear to the glass.
